The ultimate traveler. What is that, how can one be such? Several role models had been created for our vision of a perfect adventurer, like: Dora, the Explorer, Indiana Jones, and many more. Most of people on this planet have or had a role model, that symbolized their travel ambitions of seeking knowledge about what lies beyond their horizon. Earlier times, my personal solo travel ambitions were supported by role models from japanese Mangas, of people seeking adventures into the unknown, only going for their heart and their ways of life. But, as great as they are giving us the ambition; most of them are made up. Fictional, letting us dive into their lives, as we enjoy ourselves in their worlds. A fiction should never be an actual role model in anything, but a real living being, as only life can tell a story of success. That’s where we are getting to people, such as Edmund Hillary, Neil Armstrong or maybe personal role models like your relatives or friends. So, is this the answer? Do we need to do the same, that others did? Are others achievements deciding, if you are worthy to carry a title in any of your field of work or passion? If we are measuring the title of being the “Ultimate Traveler”, according to achievements, then I will never be the ultimate traveler, because I will never travel to the deepest levels like Jaques Piccard, or as far as Neil Armstrong. On the other hand, does it matter? Not, if you care about emotional events, instead of achievements, and that’s where it gets important.
All around the globe, guesthouses are the usual knot of meetups between strangers on their journeys. where tourists and travelers meet, coming and going to places, you might know of, or might have been to. It is only a matter of time, until you will gather with other travelers on a table, with a drink of your choice, where everyone asks the usual questions to crack the ice between them;
Where are you from? What do you work? How long do you travel for? Where have you been traveling?
Now, the first two questions are usually not giving a great difference to the level of being an “Ultimate Traveler”, but the last two, they do indeed. If that’s what matters on the table. They will find out, that one person, among the people on this table has traveled much longer than the other people, let’s say 6 months. And he will continue for another 3 months. The others are fascinated and some are emotionally tilting between jealousy and indifferent behaving. Some young or new ones are even placing themselves below and do not dare to name themselves travelers, which is terrible. But one thing is for sure; Everyone tries to stay cool. I remember this long-time traveler I met, that always talked about different places in Sri Lanka and expected everyone on the table to know about the local names of these places, and if no one did, he played this surprised genious and explained, as if everyone needs to know these names, else you are not an “Ultimate Traveler”. If you don’t have this achievement of knowing all the names of the country you are visiting. Travelers, that make me facepalm.
Achievements on travelings are always impressive and also do deserve the respect and the wow-effect, since it is indeed not easy to travel for a long period of time, by crossing continents by land or by visiting over ten Workaway’s, like me on my previous journey, but what matters in the essence of the “ultimate Traveler” is to show heart, mind, interest and understanding for the travel passion, that one is investing in. Example, if somebody travels for the first time in life, and had to make over a year of preparation to leave for a three week trip, this determination and willpower have a high place of respect. If somebody traveled for years, but did nothing, but drugs, taking advantages from others, like “Volunteers” in a monastery, or had no realistic heart, mind, interest or understanding for his surroundings, this person is a sad example of a waste of time, and I do have met people such as these on my several travelings. That’s also why, a beginner should never place himself below other travelers, cause everyone, that is showing the determination, the respect, the passion for traveling, cannot and should not feel worth less, just cause of achievements of others, cause these important emotions and mindsets are the true key of making you: The Ultimate Traveler.
You can be one in the very next day.
